What we repair

Most roof repairs are a day or two of work for our own team. The common ones:

  • Slipped, cracked and missing tiles and slates, matched and fixed properly rather than hooked on and hoped over
  • Ridge and hip tiles that have lifted or lost their mortar, rebedded or converted to a dry-fixed system
  • Valleys that have rusted, split or lifted at the laps
  • Lead flashings at chimneys and walls, renewed where the old lead has split or a mortar fillet has cracked
  • Verges and gable ends where the mortar has fallen out or the tiles have worked loose
  • Small flat roof repairs to felt and EPDM, and leaks around roof windows and vents

Finding the leak before fixing it

A stain on a bedroom ceiling is where the water stopped, not where it started. It will have run along a rafter and down a nail before it showed, which is why a repair aimed at the stain so often fixes nothing.

We look from the loft side as well as the roof wherever there is access. A wet rafter shows the run, a dry one narrows it down, and daylight through a slate settles it. The usual causes, in order of how often we find them: a mortar fillet where lead should be, a valley failing at the laps, slipped slates from rusted nails, and a cracked ridge.

How we repair it

The failed part is replaced with the right material, not covered in sealant. Lead where lead belongs, a new valley rather than a patch over a hole, matching tiles or slates fixed with nails or proper clips. We photograph the problem before we touch it and the finished repair afterwards, so you can see work you would otherwise never see.

Where access needs a scaffold tower or a full scaffold, that is in the price we give you rather than added afterwards.

When a repair is the wrong answer

If slates are slipping in different places every winter, the nails holding them have rusted through and each repair is money spent on the same problem. At that point we tell you, and price both a repair and a re-roof so the decision is yours with the numbers in front of you.

Questions

How quickly can you come out?

We reply the same day and arrange the quote visit as soon as we can, and a leak with water coming in is moved up the list. We do not run an out-of-hours emergency service.

Do you charge to come and look?

No. The visit and the written quote cost nothing.

Can you match my tiles?

Usually, yes. Most concrete and clay tiles and most slates can be matched new or reclaimed. Where an exact match no longer exists, we say so before starting and show you the closest option.

Do I need to be in?

Not always. If we need the loft, yes. Otherwise most repairs can be done with the house empty, as long as we have access to the garden or side.
