Conservatory roof replacement: from polycarbonate to a solid tiled roof

Most conservatories are too hot in summer, too cold in winter and too loud in the rain, and the roof is the reason. We take the old polycarbonate or glass roof off and build a solid, insulated, tiled roof in its place, so the room becomes one you use all year.

What the conversion involves

A recent conservatory conversion followed the same steps as every one we do:

  • Scaffold or staging around the conservatory, and the room protected inside
  • The old polycarbonate or glass panels and glazing bars removed
  • A new timber roof structure built on the existing frame, with the frame checked first
  • OSB decking, a breathable membrane and insulation built into the roof
  • Lightweight roof tiles or slates, with roof windows if you want daylight
  • A plastered or boarded ceiling inside, ready for lights and decorating
  • New guttering and the outside trimmed and finished

Why it makes such a difference

A polycarbonate roof holds almost no heat in and lets the sun straight through. An insulated solid roof keeps the room far closer to the temperature of the rest of the house, stops the glare, and turns heavy rain from a roar into nothing. Most people who convert say the room went from storage to the one they use most.

Is my conservatory suitable?

Most are, if the base and frame are sound. We check the frame, the walls and the base at the quote visit, and if anything needs strengthening first, it goes on the quote rather than appearing halfway through. If a conservatory is not suitable, we tell you rather than build a heavy roof on a frame that cannot take it.

Questions

How long does a conservatory roof take?

Usually a few days to a week on site, depending on size and shape.

Can I keep some light?

Yes. Roof windows can be fitted in the new roof, and the room keeps its glazed sides.

Does it need planning permission?

Check with your local council whether planning permission or Building Regulations approval applies before you go ahead. We do not handle either, but we will give you the details of the new roof to help.
